Lines in the Landscape – Forest of Imagination, Wokingham

In a woodland clearing at Dinton Pastures, participants were invited to engage in a tactile, contemplative exploration of material and place through the act of line-making. Using thread, rope, string, and wool, they tied and knotted fibres around trees, creating a collaborative web of connections that responded to the natural environment.

This workshop was inspired by anthropologist Tim Ingold’s reflections on the significance of lines in human experience. Drawing from his writing, participants considered the qualities and entanglements of different material forms — threads, traces, cuts, cracks, creases, and even ‘lines that don’t fit’. The practice became a way of thinking through making, where each knot and loop held intention, memory, and presence.

The activity invited people of all ages to slow down, observe, and interact with the woodland in a new way — not just as a backdrop, but as a co-creator. The resulting installation was ephemeral yet deeply rooted in the moment, echoing Forest of Imagination’s ethos of creativity, connection, and care for the natural world.
